Version 0.93, Project Management, and the Website August 29, 2006 I'm doing a little deeper rewrite on Version 0.93 than I planned, so it's taking a little longer than I thought it would. It's getting there, though. I've also started to use some of the things I heard about at WWDC to help out development, like version control with Subversion, which is freakin' awesome. I'm also getting close to finishing the new site... or at least getting it to the point where it works... so it should be up soon. I've also been working on a project management system. It's similar to Bugzilla more than Trac. It's just a lot more simpler, prettier, and better for my purposes. The greatest thing about is that it runs on PHP/MySQL. I would probably be using Trac, but I have absolutely no clue how I would every get it up and running on this site since you need a lot of stuff. It took me quite a bit of time to get it running locally, and that's with admin access and having the ability to edit the Apache config files. But anyways, all bugs and feature requests have been going into it, and it makes it a lot easier to keep track of everything. The overall goal of it is to keep track of two or more seperate projects that have a similar codebase, and to make bugs and versions very relational. Once its a little more usable for everyone else, I'll release it through the site, though that may be some time. If you want to beta test it, drop me a line. Thats about it for now. Version 0.93 will add much more functionality than the past couple versions, and will be released sometime in the next couple weeks. August 15, 2006 I just got back from WWDC a couple days ago, and it was awesome. I got to talk to a bunch of people, including some of the guys (and girls) that work on Dashboard, Webkit, Dashcode, and even the guy who's in charge of Dashboard, and they were all awesome. PEMDAS unfortunately didn't win the ADA for the Dashboard contest, but that's OK... the widget that won, iClip Lite, looks pretty sweet. And Apple more than made up for it with having some really awesome features in Leopard... it looks like its going to be a great release. So, back to PEMDAS. Version 0.92 was released Monday or Tuesday, and had a couple bug fixes. I'm starting work on 0.93, which will feature a couple user interface fixes, as well as some features that have been requested! Well, except RPN. Sorry, but to those that have requested RPN support (and there have been a few) -- I don't have any plans to support RPN. It is sort of funny, but to understand why, you need a little background of the widget... my dislike of RPN was actually the reason I wrote PEMDAS. I have no idea how to use it, and I just find it clunky and awkward. And virtually every other basic calculator out there supports RPN instead of formulas. But before you hate me too much, just try using PEMDAS for a bit, especially the formula and answer caches. I think you'll find it hard to go back to the other way. Anyways, thats about it. Version 0.93 coming soon, and after that, it'll be verison 1. I'm not sure exactly what the release schedule will be afterwards. Assuming I can do it, version 2 is going to be light years ahead of version 1, and there should probably be some preview releases leading up to it. We'll see. August 2, 2006 I'm wrapping up version 0.92 and hope to have it released in a couple of days, definitely before the start of WWDC next Monday. This version will contain a couple bug fixes and a little bit better user interface, and maybe a couple of extras. Also, in some awesome news, PEMDAS was listed as a staff favorite last week on Apple's Dashboard Downloads page. And now it is currently sitting on the number 49 spot on the top 50 Dashboard downloads. It's pretty great... I've been really surprised at how many people have been downloading it, and hopefully everyone has liked it. And if you have an idea for something that would be useful for you, or don't like the way something works, you can always use the feedback form on the PEMDAS main page. I've already gotten some great ideas for features that will hopefully make their way into the next release or two, so a big thanks goes out to everyone who has given feedback! |
